Celebrating Mother’s Day

Mom

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY to all the mothers out there in the world. Being married to a wonderful woman who also holds the title of "Mother," I can tell you there is a lot that goes with it, sometimes even unnoticed, but surely never forgotten.

Mothers are special; very special to all of us: we all have one. There is a special bond between a child and its mother that goes beyond scientific explanation, reaching all the way to the spiritual realm. My mom can tell when something's wrong with me miles away by just listening at the sound of my voice over the phone:" Hi mom." She can diagnose my emotional status by the look of my face over a What's app video chat. Mother surely knows best.

Yet, this God-given Sherlock home instinct is never bi-directional. On the opposite, children often cannot tell what their mothers are feeling or going through. Not because they don't care, rather, because in addition to knowing it all, mothers are also gifted at hiding their pains and struggles out of their children's sight.

As I think about my childhood moments, I barely remember seeing my mother sad. Through our moments of hardships and sorrows, she always appeared in control in my view. For me, she knew it all because she had an answer to all our needs, whether big or small. I've seen her pull miracles after miracles on situations that often sounded unsolvable to me as a child. It took years for me to realize that this Super woman also carried battle scars that she kept quietly hidden away from us, her children.

Colombe

I know it's true because I see the same thing happening in my own household; as my wife pulls out her Wonder Woman act for our four boys and our little girl, as she goes through the day dealing with each one of their needs, solving one crisis after another. Watching my wife interacts with our kids now gives me the missing perspective of what my mom had been enduring while raising us, a perspective that I wish I knew a long time ago when I was just a little boy; I could've been a little bit better with my attitudes and reactions towards her.

So, as an adult now and a father of plenty, I truly get to appreciate this day when I get to send my mom a card and write her a note to tell her how much I love her and how much I'm blessed to have her as my mom. And to my wife, I make sure she knows that I'm blessed to have her as the mother to my children and as my partner. I'm here to take care of her battle wounds daily and give her all the help she needs as we both grow together on our journey of parenthood.

One special day to celebrate these women in my life is definitely not enough, but it's definitely a "never to be missed" on my calendar. Happy Mother's Day Mom. Happy Mother's Day dear Wife.

Fun weekend – Graduation Day

What a fun weekend, following a busy week. We’ve enjoyed watching the two oldest boys and their mom perform at their Tae Kwon-do graduation ceremony. They were so proud of their accomplishments. Way to go mom for keeping up with the boys! We now have three orange belts in the house and they can’t wait to move to the next one.

Martial arts are good for for teaching discipline, structure, and character, not forgetting other values such as self-control,  balance, and much more. We're hoping that this investment in their lives will make them better leaders in the future.

Ethan drew this a long time ago and I keep this in my journal every time I travel. It reminds me that there is more to life than work. Family always comes first no matter what. We work to provide to our family. We fight to protect our family.

This priceless drawing also make me at peace because he drew us all "smiling" and happy. That's how he sees our family and he is absolutely right. It's good to know that they are happy. Sometimes life may seems chaotic and we tend to question our decisions and judgments whether or not we made the right call... At the end of the day, my barometric meter  is the state of my family: Are they happy?  If they are, then it doesn't matter the little hiccups in the journey; we're on the right track.

So, it’s been a very looong week since the early arrival of this little princess. One thing for sure is she’s running the show from day one! Without due, here are some photos of little princess Mirabelle. Enjoy!

I've been contemplating the idea of becoming a coach as my boys are getting older and are still sticking with soccer as their main sport. We practice together any time we get a chance, but I would like to dedicate some time to teach them the core basics.  Should they continue with this, I will probably have them join a competitive team and see how they handle it. Right now, it's more for exercise and fun time.

Nick and Ethan

Last year, both Nicholas and Ethan played on a small church league competition and they both enjoyed it so much that they wanted to do it again this year. There are so many leagues where we live; it's hard to pick. But, the main thing is all about making sure that we can accommodate driving them back and forth to practice and to all the other activities that they will have to participate on. Should they join a team, I will make sure to update their progress here online.

In the meantime, maybe I will make a section in this webpage for some practice videos? Stay tuned...

Double Awards for Nicholas!

Smart kid!

So, the kids received their report cards yesterday and I was so proud of them as they received great praises from their teachers. I have to say, for the amount of time they spend playing together, sometimes I wonder if they concentrate very well at school. But, I was put at ease by the teachers during parent-teacher meetings; nothing but great admiration for their work.

Ethan is reading almost three grades above his level and has been attending the Gifted program. His Math skills are unbelievable! I think I may just go ahead and add some additional courses on him!

Nicholas is the History and Science guy. He loves reading and grasps scientific studies like crazy. Today he received two awards (yeah, two!) : one for his grades achievements (he received straight A's on all his subjects) and the other award was on Character! Now, that one was a surprise, even Nicholas himself did not see that coming. I was mostly proud of this latter one, especially due to the fact that we've always struggled with Nicholas and his behavior at school. I remember when he started first grade, the teacher thought he was ADHD and I remember visiting the principle's office quite often. That continued until second grade.

But like I've always told his principle and the teachers, I knew my son did not have a behavior problem, but rather, a re-adjustment problem. Nicholas went straight from a daycare system to Kindergarten. He really did not know much about a structural education system, where things get done at specific times and specific places. He struggled with transitioning from one event to another. Unfortunately, his teachers did not notice that neither. We knew it very well and advised them about it, but in vain.

But with discipline (Yes, we, African Parents still believe in whooping your kids when they don't get it)  and love (lots of loving) from home and perseverance  at school, he finally got it during his third grade. His attitude started to change and we saw less and less issues. Deep inside, I've always known that Nicholas has a big heart, very compassionate and emotional guy, like his dad. So, he gets irritated when things don't go his way. But, he learned tolerance and mostly letting go of things that irritate him.

Congrats Nicholas!

Congrats Nicholas!

So, today's Character award meant more for us than the grades' award; we know he's very smart, but now, we're very happy to learn that his character has changed dramatically! Whatever it is (growing up? girlfriend? new environment?), it is working very well.  He reminds me a lot of my own self. I never liked school that much when I was little. I thought it was a waste of time since it took my time away from my friends, playing outdoor. Yet, everything changed when I met Colombe (come to think of it, it was also in my fourth grade!). Suddenly, I went to school earlier, made sure I never missed a day so that I can see her once more time. Now, our kids seems to follow the same path I guess lol.

I'm very proud of all my kids and thank God for them in my life. They are a bunch, but a very good bunch to have!

"Happy Father's Day!"

Thank you to my sons for the wonderful Father's Day gifts: a great breakfast, gifts, and amazing cards. Love you guys!!! Thank you to my wonderful wife for a great day, celebrating me! Love you as always! Thank God above all for the wisdom and love in my life. A great dad is the one that walks with Jesus everyday, knowing that without Him, there is no life. God bless all the fathers today, but mostly, God bless all the fatherless, because He is the father of all.
